COLUMBIA, S.C. – Davidson volleyball (4-7) dropped their match Friday with undefeated South Carolina (10-0), 3-0, at the Gamecock Invitational.
Sophomore Sabrina Shepherd, the 2015 Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year, led the Wildcats offensively, pulling in an incredible .538 hitting percentage with seven kills. Freshman Josie Treadwell had a career night, posting a career-high 14 digs. Blocking machine Emily Franklin, a senior captain, again continued to be a wall, adding three blocks.
The Wildcats took a small lead to begin the contest, and kept it close until the 11-10 mark, when the Gamecocks took five points in a row to go up 15-11. After a service error halted their rally, South Carolina reeled off five unanswered before taking the opener, 25-16.
An eight-point rally in favor of the Gamecocks opened set two, before Davidson responded with three unanswered to break up the momentum. South Carolina went on to lead by as many 12 points before winning the set, 25-14.
In what was ultimately the final frame, the 'Cats clawed, maintaining a two-to-three point lead until the game reached a 20-20 stalemate. Back-to-back attack errors gave the Gamecocks the advantage, and despite a kill from junior Sarah Fink to put the team back within one, South Carolina went on to take the set 25-21 and remain unbeaten on the season.
The Gamecocks were led by freshman Mikayla Shields, who pulled in a career-high 19 kills and a .500 hitting efficiency. She also added three blocks, joining senior Jacqy Angermiller, who totaled four.
Davidson will play two matches Saturday, facing Gardner-Webb at 10 a.m. before closing the final non-conference weekend with William & Mary at 4 p.m.
