COLUMBIA, S.C. – Davidson volleyball suffered the Saturday sweep, falling in five set contests to both Gardner-Webb (25-19, 21-25, 21-25, 25-18, 5-15) and William & Mary (25-23, 25-23, 22-25, 24-26, 14-16) to conclude the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.

The Wildcats drop to 4-9, while the Runnin' Bulldogs move to 8-5 and the Tribe 6-7.

Sophomore Mason Rooney recorded her second triple-double of the season in the nightcap match, posting 15 kills, 30 assists, and 12 digs. Fellow setter Mikayla Derochie turned in back-to-back double-doubles, her sixth and seventh in her last eight games.

The squad continued its dominant play at the net, posting 26 team blocks across the two matches, including 14 against William & Mary, tying for their second most all season. Senior Emily Franklin continued her machine-like play, pulling in 14 total blocks on the day. She now has 69 on the season, ranking in the Top 15 nationally, and was named to her third consecutive All-Tournament team.

MATCH ONE: GARDNER-WEBB 3, DAVIDSON 2
The 'Cats had two members record double-digit kills in Franklin (12) and junior Kelly Friers (13), while freshman Josie Treadwell turned in her second-straight game with ten digs or more, posting 11.

Davidson took the opening stanza, leading by four points at multiple times during the set and even going up by five at 17-12. Perhaps what solidified the frame in the 'Cats favor was Rooney, who turned in back-to-back-to-back service aces, giving them the 24-16 lead and going on to take the 25-19 victory.

After a quick lead in the beginning of the second set, Davidson played down the entire frame, falling 25-21. After being behind by as many as six points in Set Three, the 'Cats worked their way back, forcing a tie at the 20-20 mark. Gardner-Webb went on to take the set by the same score, 25-21.

The Wildcats fired back in Set Four, going up by as many as five points on two separate occasions. Derochie got in on the ace action, pulling in two straight of her own, and Davidson went on to secure the win at 25-18 and force a fifth and final set, which they dropped 15-5.

MATCH TWO: WILLIAM & MARY 3, DAVIDSON 2
Despite four players with double-digit kills, the 'Cats dropped their second-straight five set battle. Friers once again led the team, posting 18 slams, joined by Rooney with 15, junior Mary Harriet Moore recorded a career-high 11, and Franklin with 10.

After overcoming seven tied scores, the 'Cats came away with the first set 25-23, and started the second frame with momentum, going up by as many as six points and securing the set by the same score.

The Tribe turned it on in Set Three, bouncing back from a five-point deficit to avoid the sweep at 25-22. The fourth set was a grind, as the squads reached tied scores 18 times. The biggest lead of the frame was two points, and things looked to be in favor of the 'Cats after Rooney picked up a kill to bring the score to 24-24, but the Tribe responded with back-to-back slams and took the set 26-24, forcing a final set.

Continuing with the trend of the match, the finale was an all-out clash. The Wildcats went up 12-9 and looked to seal the deal, but the Tribe spoiled it taking five straight and going on to steal the victory 16-14.
