RICHMOND, VA. – Davidson volleyball dropped a 3-1 ( 25-22, 24-26, 20-25, 18-25) contest to conference foe VCU to open Atlantic 10 play Saturday in Richmond, Va.
Â
Senior Mikayla Derochie and sophomore Mason Rooney each turned in a double-double, posting 19 assists and 11 digs each. Junior Kelly Friers led the team with nine kills, followed closely by Rooney with eight. Senior Emily Franklin had her lowest blocking numbers of the season, recording just one solo and three assisted. Derochie had six block assists, with sophomore Sabrina Shepherd also collecting six and one solo. Freshman Josie Treadwell also recorded 11 digs.
Â
"The team battled today," head coach Chris Willis said, "but we just came up short in a few crucial stretches. I like that we were able to make changes in the middle of the match and were adaptable to several different situations. This match will make us better and I'm looking forward to next week's contests against La Salle and Duquesne."
Â
The team picked up the first set win, holding three different leads of eight, seven, and six points apiece before narrowly taking the frame 25-22. Things looked to be on a roll in the second frame, with the Wildcats up 24-21 and looking for set point. The Rams battled back, taking five straight points and the set 24-26.
Â
With the exception of the first three points in the third set, the Rams led the entire frame, but the 'Cats kept it close, staying within two points until the final moments, when the Rams secured six of the last seven at 20-25.
Â
The teams tied four times in the fourth game, the last coming at 11-11 before the Rams snuck away with the win at 18-25 and the match, 3-1.
Â
Davidson heads back out on the road, traveling to Philadelphia to face La Salle on Friday before finishing the road trip at Duquesne on Sunday.Â
