PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – A trio of career-high performances propelled Davidson volleyball (5-10, 1-1 A-10) to its first league win of the season Friday.  The 'Cats recorded a five-set victory over La Salle (9-9, 0-3 A-10) after taking the first two sets 25-14, 25-21, dropping sets three and four 28-26 and 25-14, but battling back to take the finale 15-8 at McGonigle Hall on the campus of Temple University in Philadelphia.

Juniors Kelly Friers and Sarah Fink each collected career-bests; Friers ignited for 20 kills and Fink was closely behind with 15 and a stellar .302 hitting percentage. Senior setter Mikayla Derochie turned in her fourth consecutive double-double outing, posting 40 assists and 16 digs, and freshman libero Elise Edman improved her career-high to 25 digs. Senior Emily Franklin continued her dominant play at the net, pulling in seven total blocks.

"We had some good grit tonight," head coach Chris Willis said. "I'm proud of the way the team responded when Mason [Rooney] and Sabrina [Shepherd] couldn't go. Kelly [Friers] and Sarah [Fink] rose to the occasion and everyone followed. It was just a great team victory."

The 'Cats opened the match with a commanding first set, having never trailed. Davidson used a 5-0 run to open up a nine-point gap late and cruised to a first set victory. After a back-and-forth beginning to the second, the Wildcats took control late, breaking a 14-all tie and ending the frame on a 10-6 run. Friers came alive in the set, recording six kills, while hitting .500.

Davidson was nearly able to pull off the sweep, but dropped the third frame 28-26 after the Explorers pulled off back-to-back slams. Franklin led the squad during the set, hitting at a .364 clip with five kills. La Salle controlled nearly all of the fourth game, leading by six points on two separate occasions before taking the gap all the way to 11 and forcing a fifth frame after a 25-14 win.

The 'Cats returned to their earlier form in Set Five, using three different five-point leads to seal the set and match at 15-8. Friers again collected five kills, hitting at an incredible .625 efficiency. As a team, the Wildcats turned in one of their best hitting percentages of the year, posting .381 in the set.

La Salle had four different Explorers notch double-digit kills, paced by Devin Corah's 15.

Davidson returns to action Sunday, Oct. 2 when they take on A-10 foe Duquesne. First serve from Pittsburgh is slated for 1 p.m.
