PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Davidson volleyball (5-11, 1-2 A-10) dropped its fifth five-setter of the season Sunday, falling 3-2 to Duquesne in Pittsburgh. The Wildcats opened the match taking the first set 25-21, lost the second 25-17, bounced back for Set Three with a close 25-23, but slipped in the final two frames 25-19, 15-8.
Senior captain Emily Franklin matched her season-high with 12 kills to lead the team, while sophomore Ciara Cockrell added nine and junior Kelly Friers provided eight. Franklin also recorded six blocks, second to the match-high seven from sophomore Sabrina Shepherd.
After a 10-10 stalemate in the opening stanza, the 'Cats ignited for a five-point rally to create a heavy lead and gain the early advantage at 25-21. The Dukes reversed the roles in Set Two, going up by as many as eight points on two different occasions to seal the 25-17 win.
The third frame was more of a cat-and-mouse affair, as the squads reached a tie score 12 times and saw seven different lead changes before the Wildcats went in favor for good at 25-23 thanks to three straight kills from Franklin, Cockrell, and freshman Josie Treadwell.
Despite trailing by five points early, the Dukes forced a fifth set after securing a 25-19 Set Four using the same three-straight kills tactic as Davidson.
Duquesne turned on the drive in the finale, collected eight unanswered points early in the set and grabbing the win and match.
The Dukes sported a stat sheet with three players in double-digit kills and five with double-digit digs.
The Wildcats make their long-awaited return to Baker Sports Complex Friday, facing off against A-10 foe George Washington.
