DAVIDSON, N.C. – Led by three double-digit kill performances, the Davidson Wildcats (6-11, 2-2 A-10) picked up their second league win of the season Friday, downing George Washington (6-11, 0-5 A-10) in a five-set thriller at Baker Sports Complex.
"Tonight was a gritty win," head coach Chris Willis said. "I'm very proud of how they fought back through some tough times. We had quite a few different people play up to their potential, and that's exciting for any coach to see."
Senior Emily Franklin and junior Kelly Friers each collected 14 kills (a new career-high for Franklin), while sophomore Sabrina Shepherd added a new season-high 11. Franklin hit at an unbelievable .591 hitting efficiency and registered nine total blocks. Shepherd added six.
GW gained the early advantage, using a series of four-point leads to gain momentum and take the opening stanza, 25-21.
Looking to continue the trend, the Colonials opened the second frame on a 4-0 rally, before the Wildcats pounced and worked their way back to within two points. The 'Cats then ran off five unanswered to gain control of the set. After three quick points late in the set, Davidson stole the frame, 25-20.
The 'Cats started slow following intermission when a middle-of-the-set surge from the Colonials presented trouble. GW went up 19-11 before Davidson clawed back, registering five points in a row and nine of the next 10. The Wildcats resumed control, forcing set point three times before back-to-back attack errors from the Colonials gave Davidson the 26-24 victory.
GW once again led early in Set 4, until Davidson reached a 16-16 tie and then stole the lead following a Colonial miscue. The rest of the frame remained as a back-and-forth duel, reaching four more ties before GW secured the set 25-23 and forced a fifth frame.
The Wildcats used a combination of Friers' kills and GW errors to lead at side change of Set 5, 8-7. The Colonials continued to pressure, tying the set, 10-10. Enter Shepherd, who poured it on late in the set with three huge slams to bring home the set and match 15-12, 3-2.
Davidson continues its A-10 weekend Sunday, welcoming the Patriots of George Mason for a 1:00 p.m. first serve.
