DAVIDSON, N.C. – In a match that featured four sets decided by two points, including two that required extra points, Davidson rallied past George Mason, 3-2 (25-23, 22-25, 25-27, 34-32, 15-13), in Atlantic 10 volleyball action Sunday afternoon at Belk Arena.
Playing in their fourth straight five-setter and sixth in the last seven outings, the Wildcats improve to 7-11 overall and 3-2 in league play, while the Patriots fall to 4-15 and 0-6.
"I really don't know what to say other than that was such another gritty performance from our team," head coach Chris Willis said. "That's getting repeated in our locker room and on the court, but our girls really fought through adversity and being down and not performing their best, but it really shows that we can play well and grind it out, even when not at our best. Mikayla [Derochie] had a fantastic match and really held the team together."
The trio of Emily Franklin, Sabrina Shepherd, and Kelly Friers each collected double-digit kills (17, 15, 14, respectively), while Derochie turned in her 11th double-double of the year (52 assists, 25 digs) to accompany her three service aces. Franklin also posted nine total blocks while Shepherd carried a .406 hitting percentage, and sophomore Katharine Franz had a career day, collecting a personal-best 7 kills and 11 digs.
The 'Cats used a series of rallies and a three-point lead late in the opening stanza to take the first set 25-23, battled the following two frames but fell 25-22 and 27-25. The 'Cats held set point in Set 3 before a gust of momentum erupted from the Patriots side, pulling in five of the next six points, including three in a row.
The fourth set was a continuation of the final moments of the third frame, as the teams continued their marathon affair. The Patriots and Wildcats reached a remarkable 21 tied scores before Davidson clawed its way to a 34-32 victory. Franklin and Shepherd each recorded six slams in the set, as Franklin pulled in an incredible .545 hitting efficiency.
The 'Cats kept the confidence for the final frame, taking the lead early on and never fully relinquishing.
Davidson remains at home, welcoming cross-county rival Charlotte to Belk Arena for a 7:00 p.m. showdown Tuesday.
