SEATTLE, Wash. – Early goals from Maxi Pragnell and fellow senior Christian Fechter weren't enough as upset-minded Davidson fell at Washington, 3-2, in double overtime Friday evening at Husky Soccer Stadium.
Looking for just their second win over a Pac 12 foe in school history, the Wildcats fall to 1-4-0 on the season, while the Huskies improve to 4-2-0.
Washington's 107th minute golden goal came off a header from David Coly, following a Handwalla Bwana corner kick.
Despite the setback, Andrew Kenneson, the reigning Atlantic 10 Co-Defensive Player of the Week, led both keepers with seven stops, including a kick save on Coly's one-v-one chance in the first extra session.
After the Huskies earned a corner and got off a shot in the opening minutes, the Wildcats settled in and grabbed the early 1-0 lead on Pragnell's third strike in the last two outings.
The Huskies, who received votes in this week's NSCAA Top-25, wasted little time evening the score with a goal from Bwana.
Less than two minutes later, Fechter put Davidson back in front at the 11:14 mark. The tri-captain's second goal of 2016 came off Jon Creel's first assist in a Wildcat uniform.
The first three goals of the contest were scored over a span of 3 minutes and 49 seconds.
In the 73rd minute, Bwana connected with Kyle Coffee, who provided a late equalizer that would eventually send the contest in overtime.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its trip to the Pacific Northwest with a 6 p.m. ET kickoff against Seattle University on Sunday afternoon.
Head Coach Matt Spear's Postgame Comments
In the moment, losing in overtime is gutting. The guys gave so much effort in to the game.
I give Washington credit as they clawed back from two deficits. They are athletic, talented and deep - their pressure was relentless. We were really close to holding on for a big win or tie.
Our start was tremendous as we got behind their left side a few times. Maxi's strike was a quick release in a tight space. He is in good form. And the second goal came from the right side too when Maxi held the ball, released wide to Jon Creel who then found Christian with the cross and finish. It was the sharp combination the guys have been doing in training.
In the second half we did not connect as many passes through and beyond UW's pressure. So that resulted in extended chances for them. Andrew Kenneson made some huge saves, but eventually the levee broke. But we just about snuck the win in, the last 10 seconds of regulation when Charlie Caswell got behind their back four, but we could not convert.
A lot of players gave huge efforts tonight. Seattle native Matt Reinikka was everywhere on our back line, his centerback counterpart Nathan Marder was especially good in the air, and freshman Malcolm McCabe was superb on the left facing a ton of challenges.
We will push on quick as Seattle University is very talented - another great chance for a big win.
