WILMINGTON, N.C. – Davidson dropped its opening matches of the season, falling 3-1 and 3-0 to Jacksonville and Winthrop at the UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Wilmington, N.C. on Saturday.
Sophomores Ciera Cockrell and Sabrina Shepherd led the offensive charge, each tallying 16 kills across the two contests, while senior captain Emily Franklin posted seven total blocks on the day and sophomore Mason Rooney collected a team-high .429 hitting efficiency.
WORDS WITH WILLIS
"We had disappointing outcomes to our first matches of the season today," head coach Chris Willis said. "We learned a lot about what we need to improve on, as well as what works on our side of the net. Our job is going to be getting better with each opportunity."
MATCH ONE: Jacksonville 3, Davidson 1
The Wildcats started in a battle with JU, fighting but falling in the first set 27-25, dropping set two 25-20, bouncing back to take set three 28-26, but were unable to force a fifth, losing the final game 25-19.
Cockrell recorded the first point of 2016, registering a kill off a ball from freshman Josie Treadwell in the opening play of the first set, and the contest continued as a short game of cat-and-mouse before the Dolphins took three consecutive points to create a 6-3 advantage.
The 'Cats scrapped back, tying the set at 10 points apiece before Jacksonville used another three-point sequence to regain control. Davidson used a three-point rally of their own, thanks to a slam from Franklin and back-to-back kills from Cockrell.
Davidson continued to claw back, reaching a 24-24 draw and forcing an extra set point, but dropped the opening frame 27-25.
The Dolphins delivered seven unanswered points to begin the second stanza and remained in command the entire game, taking the set 25-20.
The Wildcats fired back after intermission, picking up two quick points in set three, and went up by as many as four points in an intense back-and-forth affair, where the squads saw 13 ties and four lead changes before the Davidson defense forced three straight JU errors and secured the 28-26 victory.
The fourth set began much like the first, with the 'Cats keeping within two of the Dolphins until a four-point rally swayed the momentum in Jacksonville's favor as they were able to secure the set and the match with a 25-19 win.
MATCH TWO: Winthrop 3, Davidson 0
Franklin and Shepherd paced the squad, each posting six kills and above .400 hitting percentages, but Davidson fell in straight sets, 22-25, 18-25, 21-25.
Things looked promising for the 'Cats in the opening frame, after the duo connected on back-to-back kills to tie the score 8-8, one of nine during the session. The Eagles found momentum after collecting four straight points to go up 20-15, a lead they would never relinquish the rest of the set, taking it 25-22.
Davidson responded aggressively in set two, going on a five-point rally to go up 7-4 early. Winthrop then used their own rally, taking three straight points, to get within one.
The teams continued to use small rally sequences to go back and forth, until the Eagles recorded six of the last seven points to secure the 25-18 final.
Winthrop went up by as many as five points in the third frame, but the Wildcats battled late, registering three unanswered points to bring the deficit to just 22-20, but the Eagles managed to hang on and achieve the sweep at 25-21.
