WILMINGTON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball pulled off the upset Sunday, handing 2015 NCAA Tournament participant UNCW its first loss of the season in straight sets, 25-23, 26-24, 25-16, at the UNCW Courtyard by Marriott Classic in Wilmington, N.C. The win marks the first for the 'Cats this season.
Heading up the Wildcats effort was senior Emily Franklin, an all-tournament selection, who recorded a stellar .545 hitting efficiency across the three frames and pulled in 11 total blocks on the weekend. Junior Sarah Fink collected a team-high 11 kills Sunday, and sophomore Sabrina Shepherd posted a .417 hitting percentage to add to the offensive upsurge. The duo of setters Mikayla Derochie and Mason Rooney posted 46 and 44 sets on the weekend, respectively.
WORDS WITH WILLIS
"Today we focused on how to bounce back from disappointment and be a great teammate," head coach Chris Willis said. "It really allowed us to focus on making each other better and creating a powerful energy on the court. It was a complete team effort across the board."
THE BREAKDOWN
The Seahawks, the 2015 Colonial Athletic Association champions, attacked early, going up by as many as four points before the 'Cats took six of the next eight points (Franklin alone had three kills during the sequence) and came back to tie the stanza at 10-10. The pattern repeated, as UNCW went up by four once again at 16-12.
Davidson then went on a five-point rally, courtesy in part to two Shepherd slams, to take the lead at 19-17, before the Seahawks grabbed the lead yet again, going up 23-21. Once again, the 'Cats responded with four unanswered points, including the set point on a huge blocking effort from the veteran duo of Franklin and fellow senior captain Derochie.
Davidson maintained the momentum heading into the second frame, only giving up the lead one time before going up by as many as five points in the late stages of the set. The Seahawks threatened, tying the set up at 24 all before a UNCW error and Mason Rooney kill delivered the win.
With the sweep on the line, the 'Cats dominated set three taking a 10 point lead at one point before securing the set and the match at 25-18.
UP NEXT
Davidson returns to the road next weekend, traveling to Winston-Salem, N.C., for the Wake Forest Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 2 and 3.
