DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team and five players were recently named to the 2016 Intercollegiate Tennis Association's All-Academic Team, while earning Scholar Athlete honors.
Recent grad Evan Watkins along with rising seniors J.B. Gough and Zack Zapatero, junior David Hager and sophomore Eli Abernethy each earned ITA Scholar Athlete honors. Davidson as a team carried a 3.35 grade point average for the year. The Wildcats were one of eight Atlantic 10 teams to earn the team honors.
This is the first time dating back to 2002, the earliest the records are recorded for the ITA, that Davidson has earned team honors, while having players be named a scholar athlete.
Watkins was a four-time A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honoree, who graduated this past May with a degree in chemistry. He picked up a combined 16 singles and doubles wins during his four-year playing career.
Gough and Zapatero were each honored with a spot on the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for both the Fall and Spring semesters this past year. A native of Beverly, Mass., Gough finished with a 13-9 singles record and is majoring in economics. Zapatero is majoring in biology as he enters his senior year for the 2016-17 season.
From Edmond, Okla., Hager had another strong season this past year and earned the team's Rob Palmer MVP honor. He joined Watkins, Gough and Zapatero in earning A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll honors for both the Fall and Spring semesters. Playing between the No. 3-5 positions in singles, Hager tied for the team lead with 13 singles wins and added another six in doubles action. He enters his junior season with a 25-10 singles record and has another 15 doubles victories.
A freshman last year, Abernethy did not see any official match play during the Spring season.
Davidson finished with an 11-10 overall record and a 4-1 mark in A-10 play. It was the second year in a row, and third time in the past four years, the 'Cats reached the double-digit mark in wins.
The ITA All-Academic Team award is open to any ITA program that has a cumulative team grade point average of 3.20 or above (on a 4.00 scale). All varsity letter winners should be factored into the cumulative team GPA for the current academic year (including fall 2015 and spring 2016).
In order to earn ITA Scholar-Athlete status a player must meet the following criteria: 1.) be a varsity letter winner, 2.) have a grade point average of at least 3.50 (on a 4.00 scale) for the current academic year, and 3.) have been enrolled at their present school for at least 2 semesters (including freshman through senior year).
