DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson gears up for its first Atlantic 10 Lacrosse Championship Thursday afternoon when it takes on fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's at 3:30 p.m. at Rooney Field on the campus of Duquesne.
The Wildcats are making their first appearance in the league tournament in just its second year in the conference. They closed out the regular season strong, winning three of their final five games.
"Finishing last season with a conference record of 3-6, and losing three of those games by a single goal, it was a tough way to end the year," said head coach Kim Wayne, who has collected 66 wins during her tenure. "Going into this season we had six seniors who knew how close we came and were excited to lead the pack. I couldn't be more proud of the effort the entire team put forth into reaching their goal and making it to the conference tournament this year. There were a few games this season that we knew we should have had and St. Joseph's was one of them. I'm excited to see what we learned as a team since playing them at the beginning of April."
The Opening Draw Control ...
Davidson (8-8, 5-4 A-10) reached the A-10 Lacrosse Championship by earning the fifth seed after going 5-4 during the regular season in league play. It will face off against fourth-seeded Saint Joseph's Thursday, May 5, at 3:30 p.m. Should the Wildcats advance, they would take on top-seeded UMass Friday at 3 p.m.
A-10 Tournament ...
This is Davidson's first trip to the A-10 tournament in just its second year in the conference. The championship was expanded to six teams this year for the first time. UMass has won the tournament title the last seven straight seasons, dating back to 2009.
The Wildcats are 7-5 all-time in league tournaments during their time in the Big South and National Lacrosse Conferences. They went 4-3 in the NLC tournament, reaching the championship game once. During the 'Cats' two-year stay in the Big South, they were 3-2 and made the title game both seasons.
The All-Time Series/Last Meeting ...
Thursday's contest vs. Saint Joseph's will be the fifth meeting dating back to 1994, with the Wildcats trailing 3-1 against the Hawks.
In this year's meeting, senior Emma Sissman had her second straight hat trick, but it was not enough to carry Davidson as Saint Joseph's used a late run in second half to pull away for a 10-8 win. Sissman had gotten the 'Cats to within one, 7-6, with an impressive rebound-goal off her saved free position shot five seconds prior at the 12:27 mark. But, the Hawks answered with a 4-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 10-6 lead and Davidson was only able to get two more goals the rest of the way.
Last Time Out for the 'Cats ...
No. 16 Massachusetts proved too much in Davidson's final regular season game on the road, as it won for the 12th straight time in picking up a 12-5 decision. The Wildcats got within 8-5 in the second half, but the Minutewomen asnwered with four straight goals to seal up the win.
Annie Brockett had her seventh multi-goal game of the season, pacing the Wildcats with two goals to give her a personal-best tying 22 on the year. Lucy Sexton, Jean Atkinson and Christine Molinari each added a goal apiece, while Sexton and Emma Sissman dished out one assist each. Sexton has a career-high 32 points on the season (20 goals, career-high 12 assists).
