KANNAPOLIS, N.C. – Davidson's David Sargent (72-71 = 143/+1) sits tied for 12th out of 89 competitors following day one of the 2016 Cabarrus County Irish Creek Intercollegiate.
The two-day 54-hole event is being played on the Par 71, 7,099-yard Club at Irish Creek layout.
In addition to co-hosts Davidson and Charlotte, the 16-team field features Akron, Appalachian State, Dartmouth, East Carolina, Florida State, James Madison, Kennesaw State, Mercer, North Carolina, North Florida, UNCG, UNCW, VCU, Wake Forest.
As a team, the Wildcats are ninth at 593 following rounds of 300 and 293, respectively.
Like Sargent, teammates Alex Nianouris and Jack Lang were steady in round two with 73s.
Kennesaw State (284-283 = 567/-1) will enter the final day one shot clear of nationally-ranked Wake Forest (287-281 = 568/E), which carded a three-under 281 in the afternoon.
After opening with a four-under 67, James Madison's Ryan Cole (67-70 = 137/-5) shot one-under 70 in round two and holds the individual lead by two shots. Adam Ball (VCU), Seth Gandy (Charlotte) and Will Zalatoris (Wake Forest) are tied for second at 139 (-3).
Zalatoris fired an impressive six-under 65 on his second 18.
Despite very windy conditions, 11 players sit at level par or better.
In all, there are five Top-50 teams and seven Top-100 individuals competing this weekend.
