DAVIDSON, N.C. — After a couple of tough matches during the week in Florida, the Davidson men's tennis team came back strong to finish off the week with a 6-1 win at home vs. Fairfield Sunday afternoon on the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats halted their two-match losing streak to improve to 4-6 on the season and win the first-ever matchup vs. Fairfield (3-5).
The match started off with Davidson sweeping all three doubles positions. The senior duo of Evan Watkins and Alex Howard scored their second win together on the year with a 6-2 victory, while the pair of Jack Riazzi and David Hager improved to a team-best 4-2 on the season with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
Sealing up the sweep was Shamael Chaudhry and J.B. Gough at the top spot, needing to win a tie-breaker, 10-8, to secure their third win together.
Davidson then took all but one of the six singles positions to earn the match win. Chaudhry, Gough, Riazzi and Hager each won their singles matches. Chaudhry played a super tie-breaker (13-11) to determine his match against his Stag opponent after splitting his first two sets, 6-2 and 5-7.
Gough won his sixth match of the season, taking a 6-1, 7-6 decision at No. 3, while Riazzi also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 6 for his fifth win of the year.
Tying Gough for the team lead in wins was Hager, who rolled to a strong 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 4 where he is 4-3 on the season.
Giving the 'Cats their last singles point was Artem Khrapko at No. 2. The sophomore lost his first set, 6-3, but regrouped to pick up a 6-4 second-set victory. With the team match decided, he played a super tie-breaker and prevailed 10-6 to net his fourth win of the year.
Despite falling in a super tie-beaker (10-6), Zack Zapatero played well at No. 5 singles. He won the first set 6-4, but could not seal the match win, falling 6-3 in the second set to force the super tie-breaker.
Davidson, in the midst of playing nine matches during the month of March, plays host to Wofford for a mid-week match, March 9.
