DAVIDSON, N.C.  — Winthrop's Shannon Gallagher scored two of the Eagles' four second-half goals and Davidson was held to just one goal in the final 30 minutes as it fell 8-5 Sunday afternoon inside Richardson Stadium on Stephen B. Smith Field in women's lacrosse.

Both teams played to a 4-all tie in the first half, but Winthrop scored three goals in the first 10 minutes of the second half to take the lead for good and remained perfect on the season at 4-0.

Four different Wildcats (1-2) scored on the afternoon, with Jean Atkinson and Kendall Thielemann each recording two points on a goal and an assist. Emma Sissman, Christine Molinari and Sophia Sgroi netted the other goals.

Joining Gallagher with two goals was Alexis Linhardt and Allie Yeager, while Katie Clark had a goal and an assist.

Yeager scored the first two goals quickly for the Eagles at 27:20 and 26:45, and Linhardt made it 3-0 with another goal a minute later.

Davidson regrouped after a timeout and Molinari sparked a 3-0 run by the 'Cats with her second goal of the season at the 19:56 mark. Sissman followed with her team-leading 10th score of the season four minutes later and Sgroi tied it up with less than 12 minutes left.

After Winthrop regained the lead on a free-position shot, Atkinson tied it up again with 21 seconds on the clock on a pass from Thielemann to make it 4-4 heading into the break.

Much like the first half, the Wildcats saw the Eagles again start out quickly by getting three goals in the first 10 minutes. Gallagher scored one of those goals and added her second of the half a little later.

This time though, Davidson was unable to mount a comeback. It was held to just four shots in the half, with the lone goal coming off the stick of Thielemann with 1:32 remaining in the game.

Winthrop outshot Davidson, 21-12, and won the battle in draw controls, 10-5. The Wildcats picked up a game-high 18 groundballs and were 18-for-19 on clear attempts.

Three 'Cats recorded three or more groundballs, led by defender Mackenzie Sivilli's career-high four. Goalie Dana Stasieluk record a personal-best three, while Holly Thomas picked up three as well to go with a caused turnover.

Stasieluk earned a career-best five saves between the pipes, while Winthrop's Alaina Girani recorded four.

Davidson continues with its seven-game homestand by hosting Holy Cross for the first time, March 8, at 6:30 p.m.
