RICHMOND, Va. — Mackenzie Latt registered her fourth 20-point outing of the season and Davidson picked up a 67-59 Atlantic 10 win at Richmond Wednesday afternoon in Robins Center during the Spiders' Education Day game.
Davidson ran its league record to 5-7 and is 11-14 overall, while Richmond fell to 2-9 in A-10 action and 9-15 overall.
Latt finished with an even 20 points on 9-of-14 shooting with a couple of free throws and added nine rebounds. The 20-point effort was the fifth of her career as she led Davidson is scoring and rebounding this year for the 10th and 13th times, respectively.
Also hitting the double-digit mark was Hannah Early and Alexandra Long with 12 points each. Long tied her career-best with eight rebounds, all on the defensive end, while Early moved to within three triples of setting the all-time record after a pair of treys.
The trio of Latt, Early and Long scored 11 of the Wildcats' final 13 points in a game-ending 13-6 run after Richmond cut their lead down to one, 54-53, with a little over six minutes left.
The Spiders put four players in double figures, paced by Karleigh Wike's 14 points and nine rebounds. Bria Powell and Micaela Parson scored 13 apiece, and Janelle Hubbard had 10, five below her season average.
The Wildcats came out hot to start, hitting seven of their first 10 shots, and 10-for-14 overall in the first quarter, for a 21-11 lead. Every starter scored in the quarter.
The lead later was cut down to three, 26-23, when the Spiders used a 12-5 run to open the next quarter. Davidson responded, catching fire from behind the arc with triples from Early and two each by Kianna Speight to end the quarter and head into the break up 39-30.
Davidson shot a blistering 65.4 percent in the two quarters combined (17-26) and finished the game at 50 percent. Richmond shot 36.2 percent and were held to 33.3 percent in the third and fourth quarters combined.
The Wildcats led by 10 points twice in the third quarter before the Spiders used a 10-6 run to finish the quarter and get within 49-44.
The Spiders kept the momentum going, closing within one at 54-53 on a three-pointer by Hubbard and 6:34 left. Davidson answered right back on its next possession with two Dukes' free throws and ran off a quick 8-0 run to go back up for good at 62-53 with 3:05 remaining.
Davidson won the rebounding battle at 36-29 and dished out 14 assists on its 25 field goals.
Davidson concludes its two-game road trip with a visit to Saint Louis next Monday, Feb. 15, for a noon tip on President's Day.
