Davidson Suffers Setback to Saint Louis in League Opener

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Billikens' Sadie Stipanovich scored 33 points and Jackie Kemph added a double-double (20 points, 10 assists) to lead Saint Louis past Davidson, 106-69, in both team's Atlantic 10 women's basketball opener Saturday at Belk Arena.
Despite the setback, Mackenzie Latt paced three Wildcats in double figures with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, while Justine Lyon finished with 18 points and Chloe Johnson had 12 to go with six assists. Latt and Lyon each pulled in six rebounds.
Saint Louis (11-3, 1-0 A-10) torched the nets for 60.6 percent, which included a 12-of-25 effort from long range. It also dished out 33 assists on its 43 made field goals, while pocketing 12 steals. 58 of its points came in the paint and scored 29 points off turnovers.
Davidson (2-11, 0-1 A-10) turned in one of its better shooting performances on the season at 46.3 percent, but hit just one three-pointer and went 6-of-12 at the line.
The first quarter featured five ties and 11 lead changes before a 3-pointer from Stipanovich at the buzzer gave the Billikens a 22-21 lead.
Stipanovich's trey to close the opening period sparked a 17-4 run and helped Saint Louis to a 54-38 lead at the break. The preseason all-conference selection scored the Billikens' first 12 points, 17 in the first quarter and had 22 at the half.
The Billikens led 86-54 at the end of three and stretched the margin to as many as 37 with just under a minute to play.
The Wildcats saw their streak of reaching 40 rebounds come to an end at six straight with 32 boards, but kept their double-digit offensive streak alive with 12 to make it 14 games in a row.
Davidson travels to New York to start the new calendar year by facing off against Fordham, Jan. 4, at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the fifth meeting all-time between the two schools women's basketball programs, dating back to the first meeting, Nov. 29, 1996 … Saint Louis leads now 4-1 … with her 23-point outing, Latt is now 26 points away from reaching the 1,000-mark for her career … the 20-point outing was her third of the season and the eight of her career … she pushed her double-figure points streak to 10 straight … … Latt is averaging 21.4 points and 9.4 rebounds a game, while shooting 57.8 percent in the past five games … the Wildcats dished 14 assists and have collected 80 in the past five games combined.
