DAVIDSON, N.C. — UCF's Zykria Lewis had a game-high 26 points as Davidson fell in its home opener to the Knights in a 57-38 setback Wednesday evening in women's basketball inside John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats were unable to shake off a cold shooting night (29.4 percent) and dropped to 0-3 on the season. The Knights moved to 3-0 on the year.
A 12-2 run at the end of the third quarter by UCF followed by a 7-2 run to open the fourth quarter helped the Knights pull away from Davidson, turning a 25-23 lead into a 44-29 advantage. The 'Cats were only able to get within 14 points the rest of the way.
Junior Chloe Johnson reached the double-digit mark for the first time as a Wildcat, scoring 11 points. Fellow classmate Mackenzie Latt filled the box score with eight points, six rebounds, two blocks and three steals.
Saadia Timpton came off the bench for a season-high eight points, four rebounds (all on offense) and two steals, while Rachel Piles set a career high with three blocks and tied her personal best with three steals.
Joining Lewis, who hit 11-of-19 field goals and added a game-high seven steals, in double figures for UCF was Fifi Ndour with 14 points to go with seven rebounds.
Coming out of the halftime break down 23-17, Justine Lyon and Mackenzie Latt (twice) hit three straight jumpers to cut the 'Cats' deficit down to two at 25-23 with 6:28 on the clock, forcing the Knights to call a timeout.
It would be as close as Davidson would get, as UCF drained back-to-back three-pointers as part of a 12-2 run to end the third quarter. The spurt continued at the start of the fourth quarter, with the Knights scoring seven of the first nine points for a 44-29 lead and 7:01 remaining.
Neither team could get their offense going in the first two quarters, with UCF holding leads of 11-8 at the end of the first quarter and 23-17 at halftime. The Knights shot 34.4 percent, while Davidson hit only 32 percent combined in both quarters.
Davidson came up with 13 steals off of 21 UCF turnovers to give it 40 steals on the season in three games. The Wildcats hauled in a game-high 13 offensive rebounds, just missing out winning the battle on the boards at 37-35.
The Wildcats stay at home and will host Radford this Saturday evening at 7 p.m.
