WASHINGTON, D.C. -- 15 first-place finishes, including two individual event sweeps, highlighted the day for Davidson swimming and diving as both the men's and women's squads faced off against Georgetown in the nation's capital.
The teams turned in a combined 42 finishes in the Top-3, but were unable to unseat the Hoyas, falling 170.5-129.5 on the men's side and 156-144 on the women's.
"Georgetown deserves credit for taking care of business today," head coach John Young said. "Both of their squads were sharp, and both used execution to create energy to win the meet. With a few exceptions, our effort [on our swims] was solid. We need to do a better job turning our willingness to give effort into productive closing speed at the end of races. Our leaders, who respond so well to the expectations that the team places upon them, do this well."
For the third straight meet, senior standout Elise Lankiewicz, the reigning Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week, went undefeated, pulling in four first-place finishes and continuing to down her competition by wide margins. In the 1,000 freestyle (10:06.63), the Wilmington, Del., native finished 16 seconds ahead of second-place, and came in four seconds ahead in the 500 free (4:58.21) and seven ahead in the 200 free (1:52.11).
Lankiewicz was mirrored by freshman Crossan Cooper on the men's squad, who recorded top finishes in the 1,000 free, 200 breaststroke, and 200 individual medley events (1:57.51). Cooper's time of 9:45.35 in the 1000 free was the seventh-best in program history, and his 2:08.86 clip in the 200 breast was the best mark on the team this season.
Junior Emily Yang added production to the women's campaign, pulling in firsts in both the 200 fly (2:09.47) and 200 IM (2:11.09), while senior Katy Williams touched first in the 100 breast (1:05.98) and second in the 200, pulling in a 2:23.07 time, the top on the team this season in the event.
Lankiewicz was joined by classmate Erica Clancy, sophomore Maggie Farrell, and fellow senior Kassie Shannon to take the top time (3:33.92) in the 400 free relay.
For the men, Cooper's success was supported by first-place finishes from junior Clay Resweber (200 free; 1:43.34), junior Riley League (200 fly; 1:54.18), junior Taylor Willenbring (100 free; 47.42), and senior Chris Cardwell (50 free; 21.78).
The quartet of freshman Ian Hentenaar, junior Ari Snyder, sophomore Jake Perron, and Willenbring rounded out the top finishes for the day, taking the prize in the 400 free relay (3:10.13).
Davidson returns to the pool in late November, traveling to Division III-powerhouse Kenyon College for the Kenyon Invitational in Gambier, Ohio.
