CARY, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team sent four players to compete at the USTA/ITA Regional Championship over the weekend of Oct. 14-16, hosted by Duke in Cary, N.C.
Shamael Chaudhry, David Hager and Ricky Saad each played in both the singles and doubles draws, while Jack Riazzi teamed with Chaudhry in doubles.
Saad had the best run for the Wildcats, picking up two wins on the weekend in singles action. The senior lost his first match in the main draw to Furman's Cameron Green, dropping a 6-2, 7-5 match. But, he came back strong in his next two consolation matches, netting a nice three set victory over N.C. State's Michael Ogden by the score of 6-2, 2-6, 7-5, and then downing Milo Bargeron of Appalachian State in a straight-set 6-3, 7-5 win.
Chaudhry lost a three-setter in his first match of the weekend (1-6, 6-4, 6-4), but came back to earn a 6-3, 6-1 victory against Josh Swindler of UNC Asheville in his first consolation match. The senior's weekend ended though with a tough 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Wake Forest's Sean Hill.
Playing the 11th seed from North Carolina, Hager lost a 6-3, 6-2 decision in is first round match in the main draw, then dropped a 6-2, 6-1 decision to a player from College of Charleston to end his singles run.
The junior teamed up with Saad in doubles though to earn a win on the consolation side. The duo fell to a pair from Wake Forest in their first match in the main draw, 6-3, 7-6, but regrouped to pick up a 10-7 super tie-breaker win against a pair from N.C. State in their first consolation match (6-2, 1-6, 10-7).
The other Wildcat duo of Chaudhry and Riazzi won their first doubles match in the main draw, 6-3, 6-3, against a pair from Charlotte, but their weekend ended in the second round with a 6-1, 6-4 setback to South Carolina.
Davidson takes a week off before going to the Winthrop Invitational at the end of the month, Oct. 28-29.
