DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson swimming and diving concluded its two-day opening meet Saturday at Cannon Natatorium, with the men and women each picking up a win. The men delivered a huge 190-150 victory over league foe George Washington, who was ranked in a second-place tie in the Atlantic 10 Preseason Poll. The ladies trumped UNC Asheville 221-125, and were narrowly edged out against GW, as the Colonials collected 176.5 points to Davidson's 175.5.
The Wildcats recorded over 30 Top-Five finishes, 15 for each the men and women. A handful of freshmen competed in their first collegiate races, with multiple rookies capturing Top-Three status. Davidson swept the diving events, with junior Hayley Atkins winning both the one and three meter events for the women, and sophomore newcomer Andrew Miller, in his first ever diving meet, took the top men's spots.
Senior Elise Lankiewicz continued her hot start to the season, taking first in the 500 free (5:00.25) and 100 fly events (56.36), while anchoring the 400 free relay that touched in at third. Classmate Katy Williams was out touched at the last second, coming in third in the 200 breast (2:24.26).
Freshmen Olivia Stanley made quite the introduction, registering a 59.08 mark for third in the 100 fly, and joined Lankiewicz and seniors Kassie Shannon and Erica Clancy in the 400 free relay (3:34.11).
The men were paced by outstanding swims from a trio of freshmen. Rookie Crossan Cooper took second and third overall in the 400 IM (4:10.54) and 200 breast (2:09.12) events, respectively. Adding to the trend of the morning were fellow freshmen Brian Hynes, who turned in a 1:56.09 clip in the 200 back, good enough for third place overall, and Alex Strasser's second place in the 100 fly (2:51.85).
A pair of juniors also recorded medal-level placings Saturday for the men; Clay Resweber chronicled a 4:42.46 clip in the 500 free (2nd) and Taylor Willenbring sprinted his way to a third-place, 47.84 finish in the 100 free.
Both squads return to action the weekend of Oct. 21-22, when the Wildcats head to Richmond, Va. The men will face off against A-10 opponent George Mason, while the women could face one of three league foes (Richmond, George Mason, Duquesne) each day.
