DAVIDSON, N.C. — Four of Davidson's five starters reached double figures in points to help lead the Wildcats to their second straight Atlantic 10 win with a 69-51 decision over visiting Fordham Wednesday evening in John M. Belk Arena.
Davidson won the program's first-ever A-10 home game, while picking up their biggest win in league play to improve to 3-3 on the season and 9-10 overall. It also picked up its first win in the series vs. the Rams (8-11, 3-3 A-10).
In addition, the 'Cats halted a 10-game conference losing streak at home dating back to last year and stopped their current four-game skid at Belk Arena.
Leading the way again was the duo of Dakota Dukes and Mackenzie Latt, as they both scored 19 points apiece after netting 18 each in last Sunday's win at VCU. Latt pulled in a season-high tying nine rebounds to go with three steals, while Dukes added six rebounds, and both dished out three assists.
Davidson as a team picked up 18 assists on their 26 field goals and shot 47.3 percent from the floor, while going 12-of-15 from the charity stripe. It also dominated the glass, 47-30.
The 'Cats defense held the Rams to just 30.6 percent shooting, including 9-of-38 from behind the arc.
The Wildcats' two other starters who reached double digits were Hannah Early and Alex Long, with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Early shot 4-of-6 from the floor, including a pair of triples, and hauled in seven rebounds, while Long also nailed two three-balls and pulled down a season-best seven boards to go with four assists.
Lauren Holden had 14 points and Samantha Clark added 10 to lead the Ram offense.
Davidson would lead at the end of the first quarter 13-11 after it hit five of its first seven shots to open the game. A three-ball by Latt midway through the second quarter made it 21-16 and the Wildcats would eventually head into halftime up 31-23.
After the Rams pulled to within five, 31-26, to start the third quarter, Davidson started to pull away. It used an 11-0 run over the next two minutes to go up 42-26 with 7:04 left. A Hannah Missry three-pointer later would cut the 'Cats lead back to single digits at 44-36, but Latt closed out the quarter scoring six straight points to make it 50-38.
The lead stretched to as many as 23 points in the fourth quarter on a Diona Johnson free throw with 2:48 remaining. Johnson came off the bench for five points, all on a career-high 5-of-6 showing at the charity stripe.
Davidson looks to keep the winning going by returning to the road for its next A-10 game, traveling to Rhode Island this weekend, Jan. 23, for a 1 p.m. contest.
GAME NOTES: This was the fourth meeting all-time between the two schools … this was sixth game where Dukes, Latt and Early have all scored in double figures, with Davidson improving to 5-1 in those games … Davidson is 9-2 when outrebounding its opponent … it has won the battle on the boards in 11 of 19 games this year … the 47-rebound mark was the 10th game this season with 40 or more … the last two games has seen the Wildcats hold its opponents to 32 percent shooting … Early is 20 three-pointers away from setting the all-time mark … Dukes and Latt combined to hit 17 field goals tonight after hitting a total of 15 last Sunday at VCU.
