DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson was not able to stop the red-hot St. Bonaventure Bonnies Wednesday night at John M. Belk Arena, as the Bonnies put three players in double figures in points and won their 14th straight game with a 59-47 decision over the Wildcats in Atlantic 10 women's basketball.
The Bonnies remained perfect in league play at 4-0 and ran their overall record to 15-2. Their win streak dates back to Nov. 24 when they defeated Detriot at home.
Nyla Rueter scored a game-high 16 points for SBU, while Katie Healy and Miranda Drummond chipped in 14 and 10 points, respectively. Healy registered a double-double with 12 rebounds, half of them on offense.
Davidson (7-10, 1-3 A-10) had just one player reach the double-digit mark. Mackenzie Latt netted 13 points to go with a team-high nine rebounds. Dakota Dukes and Hannah Early each had eight points, and Dukes added eight boards along with three blocks.
Justine Lyon came off the bench to drop in eight points and pocketed a season-high five steals to help Davidson earn a season-best 12 for the game. Alex Long finished a perfect 3-of-3 from the floor for seven points and dished out a season-high five assists.
The Wildcats were within striking distance most of the night, but SBU kept pulling away each time. It was a low scoring first two quarters, with the Bonnies holding leads of 16-10 and 25-19 going into the break.
After a Latt jumper 30 seconds into the start of the third quarter to make it 27-21, St. Bonaventure pulled ahead by 16 with a 10-0 run over the next two minutes. The lead stayed at double-digits until a mini 7-0 run by the 'Cats with buckets from Long, Dukes and Early make it 40-32 with 2:05 left in the quarter.
Starting the fourth quarter down 10 (42-32), Latt got the 'Cats within seven on a three-point play at the 9:08 mark. But, SBU answered right back with a quick five points, including an and-one by Healy to make it 47-35.
Three times Davidson got back within nine points over the next few minutes, but after another Latt jumper made it 51-42, Rueter and Drummond hit back-to-back triples to take away the momentum from the 'Cats and halt any comeback attempt.
The Wildcats forced 20 Bonnie turnovers, scoring a game-high 19 points off those miscues. St. Bonaventure shot 42.9 percent from the floor and it hit seven three-pointers. It also won the battle on the boards, 37-30.
Up next, Davidson will travel to VCU this Sunday for a 6 p.m. game, which will be televised on CBS Sports Network.
