DAVIDSON, N.C. — Davidson was unable to overcome a big second quarter run by Saint Louis, which put three players in double figures in points and hit 10 three-pointers to earn a 79-50 win on Sunday afternoon in Atlantic 10 women's basketball in John M. Belk Arena.
The Wildcats (7-9, 1-2 A-10) were up 19-18 at the end of the first quarter, but the Billikens used a 17-0 run to open the next quarter and never trailed the rest of the game.
Denisha Womack paced the SLU (12-4, 2-1 A-10) attack with a game-high 17 points, while Sadie Stipanovich and Jackie Kemph scored 14 and 12 points, respectively. Kemph scored 10 straight points during the game-changing run.
Justine Lyon paced Davidson, recording a season-high 13 points. She made all five of her field goals to tie a season-high and added a 3-for-4 showing at the charity stripe.
Dakota Dukes and Kayla Seymour each tallied 10 points, combining to shoot 8-for-15 from the floor. It was a career-high for Seymour.
Saint Louis shot 52.6 percent overall from the floor, including 58.8 percent from behind the arc on 10-of-17 shooting. Davidson was held to 33.3 percent. The 'Cats were also hurt by their turnovers, coughing the ball up 23 times which resulted in 27 SLU points.
The first quarter saw Seymour hit her first four shots, including a pair of three-balls, to give Davidson a quick 10-4 lead. SLU then went on its own spurt, a 12-2 run, to grab a 16-12 lead with two minutes left in the quarter.
Hannah Early (7 points, 5 rebounds and career-high 5 steals) ended the quarter with a bang, banking in a buzzer-beating three-pointer from just inside midcourt for a 19-18 Wildcat led.
It would be short lived though, as the Billikens opened the new quarter scoring the first 17 points to pull ahead 35-19 with 6:10 left. Lyon tried to keep the Wildcats close, scoring seven points in the quarter before Davidson went into the break down 43-30.
Saint Louis put the game out of reach for the Wildcats in the third quarter, outscoring them 24-12 and pushing its lead out to as many as 25 points.
Davidson won the battle on the glass, 34-33, and pocketed a game-high 10 steals.
Wrapping up their two-game homestand, the Wildcats host St. Bonaventure this coming Wednesday evening at 7 p.m.
