Davidson Falters at Elon, 3-0

ELON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team went on the road to Elon Tuesday night and was upset by the host Phoenix, 3-0. The defeat came by set scores of 25-22, 25-19 and 25-19.
Freshman Mason Rooney paced the Davidson attack with seven kills, while Sabrina Shepherd and Mary Harriet Moore each chipped in five kills apiece. Davidson committed 23 errors en route to a .018 hitting percentage.
Mikayla Derochie contributed 17 assists and 10 digs for her first double-double of the season. Morgan Shannon led the defensive effort with 17 digs to go with 10 from Kylie Bishopp.
Davidson sprinted out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set, before a string of Elon errors moved the score to 12-6. The Phoenix responded with a 9-1 run to go in front 19-15 and secure the first set, 25-22.
The two sides trade points to begin the second, before Elon pulled away with a 6-1spurt late for the 25-19 second-set win. Trailing 15-9 midway in the final set, Davidson used a 3-0 stretch of its own to move the score to 15-12, but the Phoenix responded and extended its margin 21-15 before taking the set, 25-19.
Davidson will travel to High Point, N.C., for the High Point Invitational Sept. 11-12. The Wildcats will face High Point, Wake Forest and Marshall.
