High Point Holds off Davidson in Four

HIGH POINT, N.C. – Ciera Cockrell recorded eight kills while Mason Rooney and Sabrina Shepherd registered seven kills apiece as the Davidson volleyball team fell to High Point Friday night, 3-1, at the Millis Center. The Panthers took the match by set scores of 20-25, 25-19, 25-13 and 25-19.
The two teams traded points to open the first set, which featured five lead changes and 11 ties. With High Point on top 18-17, Davidson rallied with an 8-2 run, highlighted by four consecutive blocks from Mary Harriet Moore and Rooney, to take the set 25-20.
Davidson was forced to play from behind in the set as High Point opened a 19-9 margin. A 4-1 spurt by the Wildcats moved the score to 23-17, but it wasn't enough as the Purple & White secured the set 25-19.
It was all High Point in the third set as the Panthers opened a 15-7 advantage. The Panthers used a 6-3 run to push the score to 21-10 and registered match point, 25-13.
High Point carried its momentum into the fourth set, sprinting out to a 4-1 lead and pulled away with a 9-2 stretch late for the 25-19 win.
Davidson returns to the court tomorrow with matches against Wake Forest and Marshall. The Wildcats will face Wake Forest at noon before taking on Marshall at 5:30 p.m.
