Phillips Leads Davidson to First-Place Finish at Richmond

RICHMOND, Va. – Paced by senior Ryan Phillips who finished the 5K in 15:05.9, the Davidson men's country team opened the 2015 season with a first-place finish at the Richmond Invitational Saturday morning.
The Wildcats claimed victory with 20 points, while Richmond placed second with 54 points.
Phillips claimed first-place by a margin of 5.9 seconds ahead of Richmond's Tim Gruber (15:11.8). The Wildcats didn't have to wait long for its next finishers, as Will Brewster crossed in 15:24.3 to take third, Daniel Samet covered the course in 15:37.7 to finish fourth and Ian Robertson rounded out the top-five with a time of 15:48.3.
Ramsay Ritchie, Dylan Carmack and Alex Herron claimed top-15 finishes. Ritchie clocked a 15:56.6 to rank seventh. Carmack posted a time of 16:06.7 to finish 11th overall, while Herron took 14th with a time of 16:15.6.
Walker Mogen (16:17.1) and Michael Schroeder (16:22.5) rounded out the top-20 finishes claiming 16th and 18th, respectively.
"The team ran well today, it was a very solid opening meet. Ryan Phillips ran with a lot of poise and timed his move really well," said head coach Renny Waldron. "It was great to see him get the win. Overall we are where we need to be at this time in the year."
Davidson returns to action Sept. 19, with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to compete at the Commodore Classic.
