Davidson Earns First Win With a 3-0 Sweep Over Hampton

DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson volleyball team registered its first win of the 2015 season with a 3-0 sweep over Hampton in its first game of the Wildcat Classic Friday night at Belk Arena. The Wildcats took the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-22 and 25-17.
Davidson finished the night with a .253 hitting percentage. Sabrina Shepherd and Mason Rooney paced the Davidson offense. Shepherd finished with eight kills while hitting .385. Mason registered seven kills and a .636 hitting percentage. Mikayla Derochie, Kylie Bishopp and Layne Doctson finished with three kills apiece.
Doctson and Bishopp were at the forefront of the Wildcats' defensive effort as Hampton was limited to a .051 hitting percentage. Doctson and Bishopp each tallied seven digs.
Reena Richardson, Allysa Medina and Lena Washington paced the Hampton offense with eight kills apiece.
The two teams traded points early in the set, before the Wildcats knotted the score 10-10, as the midway point approached. Davidson used a 5-0 run to go in front for good, 18-16. Leading 18-16, the Wildcats embarked on a 9-2 run down the stretch and put the frame away on a kill from Emily Franklin, 25-18.
Davidson held a 10-5 advantage early in the second behind three kills from Shepherd. The Lady Pirates kept things close before using a 4-0 spurt to take a 21-20 lead, but the Wildcats held on to take the set, 25-22.
It was all Davidson in the third as three service aces sparked the Wildcats to a 10-3 advantage. Kills from Rooney and Shepherd moved the score to 23-14 before Doctson scored the match point, 25-17.
Davidson returns to action tomorrow with two games. The Wildcats first take on Presbyterian at noon before facing ECU in the night cap.
