Six Wildcats Earn Wins in First Day of Tennis Invitational

DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team opened its own invitational Saturday by scoring four singles wins and a pair of doubles victories in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
With a steady rain fall all day, the invitational was moved inside and Davidson's first round matches were against cross-county rival Charlotte. In singles action, juniors Jordan Hart and J.B. Gough along with the sophomore tandem of Artem Khrapko and David Hager all earned wins. Hart and Gough scored victories at No. 2 and 3 singles, respectively. Hart pulled out a three-set match, taking it 2-6, 6-4, 6-1. Gough cruised over his 49er opponent with a 6-1, 6-2 straight-set victory.
At No. 1, Khrapko won a tie-breaker in his first set, 8-6, before taking the second set by the score of 6-3. Hager, playing at the No. 7 singles position, opened with a 7-5, 6-1 victory.
The duo of Shamael Chaudhry and Alex Howard nearly picked up wins as well, but fell in the end in three set matches. Chaudhry, playing his second Fall event, battled back from dropping a first-set tie-breaker to earn a 7-5 second set win, but came up short in a 6-4 decision the final set.
Howard also came back from falling in his first set at No. 8 by the score of 6-3 with a 6-4 win, but his afternoon ended with a 7-5 defeat.
In doubles, the 'Cats picked up wins at the No. 2 and 3 positions, respectively. The pair of Zack Zapatero and Hager took a 6-3 decision at No. 2. Gough and Jack Riazzi eanred the other win with a 6-4 decision.
Davidson wraps up its own invitational tomorrow as USC Upstate, Appalachian State and Charlotte return.
