DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team gears up for its second Fall event as well as showcasing the tennis program's brand new tennis courts when they play host to the Davidson Invitational this weekend, Sept. 26-27, on the hardcourts of the Davidson Tennis Courts.
The Wildcats will host their first-ever event on the new 12-court open air tennis complex, a $1.55 million project, which was built and finished in the summer of 2015. Half of the courts are equipped with spectator grandstands and the project also included installation of infrastructure for lights, which will be installed at a future date. The outdoor courts are located behind the Baker Sports Complex.
Joining Davidson at the invitational this weekend will be USC-Upstate, former Southern Conference-foe Appalachian State and cross-county rival Charlotte. The invitational is a points system, with points being determined based on position. The No. 1 singles position is worth 16 points and going two points down at each position to No. 8, which is worth two points. The top doubles spot is worth eight points, then going down to No. 4, which is worth two.
"I'm looking forward to this weekend and our first home event on the new courts," said head coach Drew Barrett, who is entering his 10th season. "We have a very talented and young group ready to hit the courts and show what they can do. It should be a great tournament with Charlotte, USC-Upstate and App. state coming to town, and we look forward to the challenge."
Play begins Saturday, Sept. 26, at 10 a.m. with singles-doubles-singles being played in that order. In case of rain on Saturday, the matches will be moved indoors and start at 1 p.m. The invite itself will be a flighted individual format with eight singles flights and four doubles flights. Sunday the teams will start play at 11 a.m. and the order of play will go doubles-singles-doubles to wrap up the weekend.
Davidson opened its Fall season at the Southern Intercollegiate Championships on the campus of Georgia in Athens, Ga., two weekends ago. Juniors J.B. Gough and Jordan Hart along with sophomores Shamael Chaudhry and Artem Khrapko represented the Wildcats this weekend.
Chaudhry led the way with an impressive run in the Division III singles bracket. The 'Cats' No. 1 singles player a year ago, Chaudhry reached the quarterfinals.
After this weekend Davidson will have five more Fall events it will participate, in starting Oct. 3-4 at the ITA All-American Championship in Tulsa, Okla.
