DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team will open its home portion of the 2015 season when the Wildcats welcome Missouri State to Belk Turf Field Thursday night. The game is set for 5:30 p.m.

About Davidson
After a two-game opening weekend, Davidson (1-1) will look to earn its second win of the year. In its season opener, Davidson blanked Georgetown, 1-0, Aug. 28 before dropping a 3-1 decision at Lehigh Aug. 30.

Senior Captain Melissa Funsten tallied both goals for the Wildcats over the weekend to lead the offense. The Raleigh, N.C., native's first goal of 2015 gave the Wildcats a 1-0 lead against Georgetown with just under 10 minutes left in the opening stanza. Against Lehigh, Funsten capitalized on a penalty corner in the second half to put the Wildcats on the board.

Defending the Cage
Senior Emily Leytham has played 135:18 minutes in goal this season for the Wildcats. The senior has made eight saves, including four stops in the shutout victory against Georgetown. Leytham owns a .727 save percentage.

Filling the Stat Sheet
The Wildcats return its top-four point scorers from a season ago. Second-team all-conference selection Melissa Funsten (3g, 3a) led all players with nine points last year, while junior Becca Jones (3g, 2a) tallied eight points, sophomore Hannah Fisher (2g, 3a) collected seven and junior Katherine English contributed six (2g, 2a).

Davidson will play six games at Belk Turf Field in 2015. Four of the six contests are against Atlantic 10 foes.Â

Fresh Faces
Davidson's roster features six freshmen, representing four states (North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Texas and Virginia). Courtney Byler is an addition at defense, Kristin Kisa, Emily Morgan, Leigha Nortier and Kate Singletary will transition between forward and midfield, while Bean Rodriguez comes aboard as a goalkeeper.

On the Sidelines
Ginny Turner is entering her ninth season at the helm of the Davidson program. Turner ushered the Wildcats into a new era, as Davidson joined the Atlantic 10 last season. She has mentored two A-10 all-conference selections, six NorPac players of the year, 18 all-NorPac East Honorees and three NFHCA all-region team recipients.

Turner is joined this season by second-year assistant Catherine Ostoich, while seniors Danielle King and Becky Johnson join the staff as student assistant coaches. Turner also added DCFH alumni Heather McKee '87 as a volunteer assistant.

Scouting Missouri State
The Missouri State Bears will carry a 0-2 record in Thursday's meeting after most recently falling to Appalachian State, 6-4, Aug 30 and opening the season with a 5-1 setback to Indiana.

Jackie Eskue, Jessi Pope, Holly Scherer, Charlie Redhead and Alexa Simpson have eached scored a goal for Missouri State, while Patrice Ahl has handed out two assists. Megan Drew and Feli Heinel have split time in goal for the Bears. Drew has recorded three saves, while Heinel has turned away eight shots.

All-Time Against the Bears
Davidson trails the all-time series 9-2, which dates back to 1980. Last season, the Wildcats fell in a 2-1 battle at Missouri State. Kaity Anstrom provided the lone tally for Davidson.

Up Next
Davidson will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., for two games. The Wildcats will first take on the University of Vermont Sept. 12 at 4 p.m., before playing host Michigan Sept. 13 at 2 p.m.
