DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team dropped a hard-fought mid-week contest to Missouri State on Thursday, 2-0. The Wildcats fall to 1-2 (0-0 A10) on the year, while the Bears, which picked up their first win, move to 1-2 (0-0).Â
Â
Senior goaltender Emily Leytham picked up three saves in just over a half of action, while Connie Cape defended the cage in the second, but saw no shots.
Â
Paige Albert tested things early for the 'Cats within the first 10 minutes, sending a shot wide at the 7:55 mark. After some back-and-forth, Missouri State's Liz Young failed to get a shot past the stalwart Wildcat netminder Leytham, at 10:46 as things remained scoreless in the early going. Both Anna Davis and Lauren McFayden were able to get shots off after the midway point of the first, but the Bears' defense was up to the challenge, blocking both to keep the deadlock. Not long after, Missouri State tested Leytham once again, but the senior stopped her second of the evening at 25:06.
Â
As the first drew to a close, Davidson rocketed five shots in the circle in the final six minutes, but Feli Heinzel turned aside three as the two sides remained locked at 0-0 into the break.
Â
Leytham recorded her third save in as many shots faced to open the second stanza, keeping a Kimberleigh Eng attempt from entering the back of the cage at 52:02, but the Bears connected on two quick strikes minutes later. At 52:35, Charlie Redhead knocked in the go-ahead goal, while Eng tapped in another at 56:43 to give MSU a 2-0 lead.
Â
After a Davidson timeout, Connie Cape came on in relief of Leytham to stem the tide. The 'Cats nearly cut into the lead after a strategic penalty corner with just under three minutes left. Hannah Fisher inserted the ball, which eventually ended up on the stick of Katherine English, at 67:55. English's final attempt, however, was turned aside by Heinzel to keep the Bears up 2-0 with less than two minutes remaining.
Â
Davidson will travel to Ann Arbor, Mich., to take on Vermont and Michigan.Â
