ATHENS, Ga. — The Davidson men's tennis team got its fall season underway this past weekend by sending four players to the Southern Intercollegiate Championships, which was hosted by the University of Georgia.
Juniors J.B. Gough and Jordan Hart along with sophomores Shamael Chaudhry and Artem Khrapko represented the Wildcats this weekend.
Chaudhry led the way with an impressive run in the Division III singles bracket. The 'Cats' No. 1 singles player a year ago, Chaudhry started the weekend by earning a bye into the round of 32. He advanced to the round of 16 with a strong 7-6, 6-2 victory over Virginia Tech's Freddy Mesmer. The winning continued to the quarterfinals when Chaudhry tallied a three-set win, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3, over Anthony Schohn of Florida Atlantic. His weekend was halted there in the quarters when he dropped a tough 7-6(4), 7-5 decision to Eastern Kentucky's Florian Graskamp.
The duo of Gough and Hart played in the Division II singles bracket. Gough lost his first match of the weekend to Kennesaw State, 6-2, 6-2, and then fell in his consolation match in a pair of tie-breakers, 7-6, 7-6.
After dropping his opening match, 6-3, 6-3, Hart regrouped and came back from a set down to take a 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-8) decision in his consolation match. The junior's weekend ended there with a 6-3, 7-5 defeat to a player from Georgia Tech.
Playing in the top singles bracket, Khrapko lost both of his matches by the scores of 6-3, 6-3 and 6-4, 6-2 to players from Saint Louis and Florida Atlantic.
All four players teamed up in doubles action. Gough and Hart played together in the D-I bracket and lost to host Georgia, 8-2. Chaudhry and Khrapko were in the D-II draw and netted an 8-7(5) decision over Georgia Gwinnett to reach the round of 32. Their run was halted though by Barry College in an 8-1 defeat.
Davidson will take a weekend off before hosting its own annual tournament, the Davidson Invitational, Sept. 26-27.
