'Cats Split on Final Day of Panther Invitational

HIGH POINT, N.C. – After falling to Wake Forest in straight sets, the Davidson volleyball squad posted a 3-2 win over Marshall to finish the Panther Invitational with a 1-2 mark. The Wildcats improve to 4-6 overall, matching their win total from a season ago.
Following the conclusion of the tournament, freshman Sabrina Shepherd was named to the all-tournament team.The Cave Spring, Ark., native finished the weekend averaging 1.33 blocks per set and 2.17 kills per set to go along with a .479 hitting percentage.
Against Marshall, Mason Rooney paced the offense with her first career triple double. Rooney finished the match with 10 kills, 30 assists and 13 digs. Shepherd and Emily Franklin each registered double figure kills. Shepherd registered 15, while Franklin turned in 12. Defensively, Kylie Bishopp tallied 23 digs and Morgan Shannon had 21 digs. Shepherd had eight block assists to contribute to Davidson's 14 total blocks on the night.
The two sides traded points early in the opening set. With the score tied at 14, Davidson used a 4-0 run to go in front 18-14. An attack error put the Wildcats in position to take match point, and on the ensuing play a kill by Rooney gave Davidson the set, 25-22, and a 1-0 lead in the match.
With the score even at 11 midway through the second set, Davidson used a 4-0 stretch to go in front 15-11, but the Thundering Herd fought back to even the score at 17. The two teams traded points before two consecutive kills from Cockrell and Derochie secured the set, 25-22.
Marshall sprinted out to a 10-5 lead in the third set, before Davidson brought the score within one off a Franklin kill. The Thundering Herd responded with a 7-1 stretch to jump out in front, 17-12. Marshall finished off the set, 25-18.
Back-and-fourth action dominated the fourth set. With the score tied at 24, the Thundering Herd rallied to score the next two points to force a fifth set. Davidson never trailing in the fifth and final set as it rolled to a 15-7 victory. Derochie, Shepherd and Cockrell added two kills apiece to pace the offense.
In the first game of the day, the Wildcats fell to Wake Forest by set scores of 26-24, 25-15 and 25-21.
The first set was a back-and-fourth affair, which featured 11 ties and four lead changes. With the score tied 23-23, the Demon Deacons scored two straight points to the frame, 26-24.
Davidson was forced to play from behind in the second set as Wake Forest rolled to a 25-15 victory.
The two teams traded points in the early goings on the third set, as the largest lead held by a team was just three points. With the score tied at 14, Wake Forest used a 3-0 run to open up a bit of breathing room, 17-14, before a service ace and a Davidson error gave the Demon Deacons the set, 25-21.
The Wildcats return to action Sept. 19-20 at the Winthrop Invitational.
