
'Cats Drop Two Matches at Charlotte Invitational

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team dropped its final two matches of the 2015 Charlotte Invitational Saturday. The Wildcats fell to UNC Asheville, 3-1, before suffering a 3-0 setback to USC Upstate at Halton Arena.
At the conclusion of the two-day event, junior Emily Franklin was named to the all-tournament team.
In the first match, Franklin and Mason Rooney paced the Davidson offense with nine kills apiece, while Mary Harriet Moore chipped in six and Ciera Cockrell contributed five. Defensively, Morgan Shannon and Mikayla Derochie had 11 digs. Derochie also dished out a team-high 17 assists. Sarah Fink registered three service aces. Davidson registered 13 total team blocks. Franklin and Moore had six apiece, while Sarah Fink contributed five. Fink tallied three service aces.
A trio of hitters paced UNC Asheville's offense. Christine Lakatos (11 kills), Catherine Fischer (10 kills) and Madison Vaughn (10 kills) all reached double figure kills, while Cara Guthrie had seven. Defensively, Bryn Pfeiffer had 17 digs, and Vaughn contributed 5 block assists and a solo block.
The Wildcats halted a 3-0 Asheville run with back-to-back kills from Cockrell, Franklin and a service ace from Shannon forcing a Bulldogs timeout with Davidson trailing, 17-12. Two consecutive blocks from Michelle McNeight and Moore brought Davidson within four 20-16, but Asheville responded and put the set away, 25-20.
The second set, which featured 10 ties and two lead changes, was a back-and-fourth battle. Davidson trailed 8-6 early in the set, before kills from Fink and Moore evened the score 9-9. A key block from Moore and a Derochie kill gave Davidson its first lead of the set, 11-10. Trailing by two late in the set, Layne Doctson's service helped Davidson crawl back to even the score 20-20, but it wasn't enough as the Bulldogs rallied, using a 5-0 spurt to take the second frame, 25-20.
Davidson sprinted out to a 7-1 lead in the third set behind kills from Rooney and Franklin and a service ace from Derochie and Fink, and never looked back. Behind the service of Moore, the Wildcats extended its lead, 16-7, before a block from Fink and Franklin forced an Asheville timeout. An 8-6 spurt pushed Davidson's lead to 24-15, before Franklin's kill put the frame away, 25-15.
After trailing 7-1 early in the fourth set, Davidson brought it within as few as two, 8-6. The two teams traded points down the stretch but a 7-4 run gave Asheville a 19-12 lead. Despite a late Davidson rally attempt, the Bulldogs took set four, 25-16 and the match, 3-1.
Against USC Upstate, Fink paced the offense with a game-high nine kills, while Franklin and Rooney added seven kills apiece. Defensively, Shannon had 25 digs, while Franklin and Rooney each contributed four blocks.
Callie Yeargin and Kayla Eversgerd led USC Upstate with seven kills apiece. Madison Haake has 19 digs, while Lexi Gober finished the match with 18 assists.
