Davidson's Rally Falls Short At Duke

DURHAM, N.C. – Despite three runs in the final at bat, the Davidson baseball team fell to the Duke Blue Devils, 10-6, in mid-week action Tuesday night at Jack Coombs Field. The loss drops the Wildcats to 14-13 overall, while Duke improved to 20-13 on the season.
The Blue Devils only out hit the Wildcats by one (12-11), while Davidson committed four errors to Duke's three. Second baseman Andy Perez led both teams with two runs, two hits and two RBI, while left fielder Lee Miller led the 'Cats with one run, three hits and a RBI. Two other Wildcats picked up at least two hits for Davidson.
The Wildcats got off to a hot start, scoring two in the first at bat off four hits. But the Blue Devils took the lead in the bottom of the first off three runs, including two that were unearned, which took the early 3-2 lead.
After Duke scored four-straight runs over a five-inning span, Davidson retaliated in the seventh as right fielder Lee Miller scored DH Ryan Lowe (doubled to left field) off a RBI single to left center that cut the Duke lead to 7-3.
Following three runs in the eighth, the Wildcats rallied to score three in their final at bat off three hits but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
On the mound, six Wildcats threw for Davidson, including RHP Nick Neitzel who started the first 1.2 innings and allowed four runs off three hits with three strikeouts for the loss. RHP Josh Smutzer capped off the day, pitching the final 1.1 innings and allowing three runs.
RHP Jack Labosky got the win for Duke, allowing two runs off four hits in the first three innings of the ball game. Three other Blue Devils came to the mound.
Davidson will hit the road this weekend when it travels to Fordham for a three-game A-10 series starting Friday, April 10 at 6 p.m.
