‘Cats Hold Off Fordham, 5-3, In Series Opener Friday

BRONX, N.Y. – Despite a ninth-inning rally from the Rams, the Davidson baseball team held on for a 5-3 win over Fordham in the series opener Friday afternoon at Houlihan Park.
Two runs in the fourth and the ninth gave the Wildcats a 5-1 lead heading into the Rams' final at bat. Fordham started the inning off with a single up the middle before a Ram homered over the centerfield fence that cut the Davidson lead to two with no outs.
The Wildcats replaced starting pitcher RHP Clark Beeker with RHP Matt Saeta, who got the final three outs in four at bats to clinch the win for the 'Cats.
Davidson out hit Fordham, 13-8, while committing just one error. DH Ryan Lowe led both teams with three hits, one run and two RBI in four at bats, while three other Wildcats picked up two hits apiece.
The 'Cats got on board first in the third when left fielder Lee Miller singled to left field which scored first baseman David Daniels (single to left field) for the first run of the game.
In the next at bat for Davidson, the Wildcats increased their lead to three when second baseman Sam Foy doubled to center field to score two runs.
After the Rams scored in the fifth, Lowe gave the 'Cats a comfortable 5-1 lead when he crushed one over the centerfield fence to score two for his second homerun of the season, which eventually secured the contest.
On the mound, Beeker got the victory for Davidson as he allowed three runs on seven hits with four strikeouts in eight innings pitched, while Saeta capped off the final inning with one hit and a strikeout.
Four Rams threw for Fordham, including starter RHP Greg Weisser who allowed three runs off seven hits with seven strikeouts in six innings for the loss.
The two teams will return to Houlihan Park tomorrow, April 11 at 2 p.m.
