MASON, Ohio — Davidson's first year in the Atlantic 10 came to an end in the quarterfinals of the men's tennis championship when it dropped a hard-fought 4-3 decision Friday afternoon to sixth-seeded George Mason at the Lindner Family Tennis Center.
The third-seeded Wildcats concluded a successful season with a 12-10 record. The Patriots (13-11) move on to face VCU, the No. 2 seed, Saturday in the semifinals.
Unlike the first meeting between the two schools, won easily by the 'Cats 6-1 at home, this match that went down to the very last team point. Four of the six singles matches went to the third set.
Tied at 3-all, everything came down to the No. 5 singles match between Ricky Saad and Conor Moran, and it was a battle. Saad dropped the first set, 6-4, but came back to earn a dramatic 7-5 tie-breaker win in the second set to force the final set. It went back-and-forth until Moran pulled away for the 6-4 win and the clinching team point. Saad ended his sophomore season at 8-9 in singles action.
The Wildcats fell behind early 1-0 after George Mason took a pair of hard-fought 8-7 tie-breaker victories at No. 2 and 3 doubles. The No. 2 team for Davidson, Jack Riazzi and Evan Watkins, came up just short in a 7-5 tie-breaker defeat and before that, the team of Shamael Chaudhry and Saad dropped an 8-6 decision in their tie-breaker.
The Wildcats' top doubles team of J.B. Gough and Jordan Hart cruised to an 8-0 showing to finish the year at 7-9.
