In First A-10 Preseason Baseball Poll, Davidson Picked 7th

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Coming off the program's winningest season ever, the Davidson baseball team was picked to finish seventh in their first year in the Atlantic 10 by the league's coaches, announced by the league office today.
The Wildcats were slotted four points behind Dayton, which received a first-place vote, with 96 points and ahead of George Washington, which had 74 points for eighth place.
Saint Louis was tabbed the favorite, garnering a total of 161 points, including six first-place votes. VCU finished second with 157 points and five first-place nods. Reigning A-10 Champion George Mason got one first-place vote and a total of 128 points to place third.
The 2015 A-10 Championship will take place, May 20-23, at George Washington's Tucker Field at Barcroft Park in Arlington, Va.
Davidson went a program-best 29-19 a year ago and finished second in its final year in the Southern Conference with a school-record 17-8 mark after being picked last in the preseason poll. The Wildcats' .604 winning percentage was their highest since 1958 (.639, 11-6) and the highest ever in which it played more than 42 games.
SoCon Coach of the Year Dick Cooke leads the program as he enters his 25th year at the helm and will have four All-SoCon performers back from last year. Outfielders Ryan Lowe (.337 batting average, started all 48 game) and Lee Miller (a team-best .368 average, nine home runs and 36 RBI) were both named to the league's first team by the coaches, while fellow outfielder Nathan Becker (.314 average, 11 home runs and 38 RBI, both second-most on the team) was a second-teamer.
In addition, third baseman David Daniels returns after earning a spot on the first team by the media and hitting .332, one of five 'Cats to hit over .300, and pacing the team with 15 doubles.
Senior starting pitcher Nick Neitzel will lead the way on the mound after going a team-best 7-2 with a 3.38 earned run average.
Davidson opens the year, Feb. 13-15, in Raleigh, N.C., where it will play Appalachian State, N.C. State and Villanova on the campus of the Wolfpack.
