NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Sophomore Jenna Brunner captured Davidson's first-ever Atlantic 10 honor for women's tennis when she was named the A-10 Performer of the Week today by the league office for matches from Jan. 28-Feb. 3.
Brunner helped the Wildcats this past weekend pick up their first win of the season, and the first career coaching win for first-year head coach Sara Anundsen, by going to 2-0 in singles and doubles in a 6-1 win at home over Arkansas State. Both schools were playing each other for the first time.
The Atlanta, Ga., native opened the match by teaming up with Elaina Cummer at No. 1 doubles and scored their second straight win to open the year with a solid 6-3 decision. Dating back to the end of last season, Brunner is currently riding a three-match win streak in doubles play.
The sophomore, who won 11 singles matches a year ago to finish second on the team, was then one of five Wildcats to sweep through their singles match, taking a straight-set 6-2, 6-1 victory at No 4 to win her first match of the season.
Brunner and the Wildcats will host former Southern Conference-foe Wofford this Thursday, Feb. 5, at 5 p.m. The 'Cats are in the midst of playing 10 of 11 matches at home from Jan. 31-March 14.
