Davidson Completes Day Three of A-10 Championships

GENEVA, Ohio – Luke Burton set a new Davidson program record in the 100-yard backstroke, as Davidson posted another strong performance on day three of the 2014 Men's Atlantic 10 Swimming and Diving Championships.
Heading into the final day of competition, Davidson sits in sixth place with 231 total points. The Wildcats trail Saint Louis (271), La Salle (289.5), George Mason (350), Massachusetts (366.5) and St. Bonaventure (412).
Burton challenged for the 100-yard backstroke title finishing touching the wall in 47:56 to set a new Davidson program record and an NCAA B cut time. The junior was just 0.26 seconds behind St. Bonaventure's Michael Pilyugin, who set an A-10 conference and meet record with a time of 47.30.
Having made it into the finals of the 400-yard IM, Grant Smith took fifth place. Smith clocked in at 3:57.18 to earn 14 points for Davidson.
In the final event of the night, Davidson picked up crucial points with a fourth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The Davidson quartet of Burton, S. Gill, Cameron Bard, and Kegley touched the wall in 3:17.65. The St. Bonaventure foursome claimed first place by a wide margin with a time of 3:12.90 to set a new A-10 conference record and an A-10 meet record in the process.
Clay Resweber and Brandon Kegley finished 10th and 11th overall in the consolation finals of the 200-yard freestyle event. Resweber clocked a 1:39.67, while Kegley finished in 1:40.30. Spencer Gill placed second in the consolation heat and 10th overall in the 100-yard breaststroke swimming a 56.10.
Davidson returns to the pool tomorrow at 10 a.m. for the final day of the A-10 Championships.
