DAVIDSON, N.C. — Saint Louis broke open a close game by using a 20-3 run over a nine-minute stretch in the second half and Davidson was never able to recover as it fell Saturday, 77-59, in its annual Play 4 Kay game in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action in John M. Belk Arena.
The Billikens (13-12, 6-6 A-10) and the Wildcats split their two-game series this season after the 'Cats won the first matchup on the road, Jan. 18.
After Mackenzie Latt hit a jumper in the paint to get Davidson within two, 41-39, with 15:39 left in the second half, Saint Louis ran off its 20-3 run to open up a 59-44 advantage with a little over six minutes remaining. The lead would grow to as many 21 points four times the rest of the way.
Sadie Stipanovich scored six of her game-high 20 points during the spurt and had 12 second-half points to lead the Billikens. Jenny Vliet scored 14 points, hitting four of her five field goals from behind the arc, while Olivia Jakubicek added 13 points.
Davidson (5-20, 1-11 A-10) was paced by Latt's 16 points to go with three steals. Dakota Dukes followed with 15 points and six rebounds. The duo went a combined 10-for-12 from the free-throw line and scored 19 of the Wildcats' 26 second-half points.
Mellissa Giegerich came off the bench to score six points, pull in three rebounds and block a pair of shots. The Wildcats' leading scorer Hannah Early, who is just five points away from 1,000 for her career, was held to four points.
Prior to the Billikens' game-changing run, both teams were battling to pull away. There were six ties and 12 lead changes in the first half. Three times Davidson led by three points in the first half, only to see Saint Louis come back to tie it up or take the lead. It eventually grabbed a 34-33 edge at halftime.
Coming off tying a season-high with 11 three-pointers in their last game, the Billikens hit nine triples on their way to shooting 53.7 percent overall for the game. Davidson finished at 37.9 percent, including 40.6 percent in the first half.
Davidson pulled in 10 of its 31 rebounds on the offensive end, marking the 21st time it has had double-digit rebounds on offense.
The 'Cats return to the road with a first-time matchup against Massachusetts, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Early' (62) remained four three-pointers away from tying Ashley Lax's single-season record of 66 set in 2008-09 … Both teams scored 32 points apiece in the paint … Latt's double-figure scoring game was her 16th of the season, while Duke registered her 12th and 43rd of her career.
