AMHERST, Mass. — Senior Hannah Early eclipsed the 1,000-point plateau for her career, but Davidson could not shake off a cold shooting night in falling on the road at Massachusetts, 60-49, Wednesday in Atlantic 10 women's basketball action in the Mullins Center.
UMass' Kim Pierre-Louis recorded a double-double on 27 points and 11 rebounds in helping the Minutewomen (10-15, 4-9 A-10) take the first-ever meeting between both schools. She scored 11 of their first 13 points to open the game and then netted nine during a game-changing 14-4 run that put the game out of reach for Davidson.
Early finished with a team-high 18 points, her 23rd double-figure scoring game of the season. She became the 17th Wildcat in program history to reach the 1,000-point mark for a career. The senior hit four of her six field goals from downtown to tie a Wildcat single season record with 66 treys.
For the 10th time this year freshman Mackenzie Latt tallied a double-double, getting 11 points and 10 rebounds. Dakota Dukes added seven points and five rebounds, while Saadia Timpton hauled in six boards.
Tied at 32-all after Davidson used an 8-2 run, capped off by Early's fourth three-pointer, to open the second half, Massachusetts responded with its decisive run to take control. Behind Pierre-Louis' nine points, the Minutewomen pulled ahead 46-36 with 9:38 left.
Dukes' three-point play with 5:02 left got Davidson (5-21, 1-12 A-10) within five, 46-41, but UMass pushed its lead back to 10 (51-41) on a jumper and three free throws.
Four straight free throws by Latt at the 1:01 mark and then with 59 seconds left cut the deficit to eight, but it was as close as the Wildcats got the rest of the way. UMass scored its final 12 points from the free throw line.
The first half saw Early go over 1,000 career points when she drilled a three-ball from the top of the key to give the Wildcats an brief 12-11 lead. Massachusetts countered with seven quick points to go up 18-12 with just over 12 minutes left in the half.
Later, Early drained her third three-pointer of the half to tie things up at 22-all, but again the Minutewomen pulled away by scoring eight of the last 10 points for a 30-24 lead at the break.
Davidson finished the game shooting just 23.8 percent, including 5-of-22 from behind the arc. The Wildcats went 14-of-16 from the free throw line, hitting 10 of those free throws on 12 attempts in the second half, and dished out 13 assists on 15 field goals.
The 'Cats recorded their 12th 40-rebound game, pulling in 42 for the game, including a game-high 18 on the offensive end.
Davidson remains on the road this weekend for a 1 p.m. contest at St. Bonaventure on Saturday, Feb. 21.
