DAVIDSON, N.C. — Aerial Powers recorded a double-double with 23 points and 12 rebounds to lead No. 23/25 Michigan State to a 73-44 victory over Davidson in non-conference women's basketball, Wednesday night at Belk Arena.
The Spartans, who shot 53.6 after intermission, finished the game at 47.3 percent, while holding the 'Cats to just 26.3 percent.
Tori Jankoska (13) and Branndais Agee (11) also added double figures for Michigan State (6-2), who held a 44-32 margin on the glass.
Hannah Early and Justine Lyon were the lone Wildcats in double figures with 13 and 12, respectively. Early also added 11 rebounds for her second straight double-double and ninth of her career.
Both teams played to an even 15-all tie after the first quarter, as Early helped the Wildcats keep pace with nine points in the quarter.
Davidson (5-4) scored eight unanswered to lead 20-15 early in the second quarter, but the Spartans closed the period on a 14-2 spurt, highlighted by 12 straight of their own, to take a 29-22 advantage into the break.
Michigan State opened the third on another run to push the margin to double digits, where it would stay the rest of the way.
Next up for Davidson is a 2 p.m. contest against first-time opponent South Carolina State this Saturday at Belk Arena.
GAME NOTES: This was just the second meeting all-time between both teams, which first met to open the 2003-04 season in East Lansing, Mich. … Early recorded her third double-double of the season and the double-digit rebounding game was the 11th of her career … it was the third time in the past four years Davidson has played a top-25 ranked team … tonight's game was the second of a season-long five-game homestand.
