DAVIDSON, N.C. — Mackenzie Latt scored a game-high 18 points and Hannah Early added 17 to lead Davidson to a 63-51 victory over South Carolina State in non-conference women's basketball action Saturday at Belk Arena.
Latt finished 8-of-11 from the floor and grabbed six rebounds, while Early drilled a season-best five of the Wildcats' season-high eight three-pointers, and added eight boards and two blocks.
The Wildcats, who improve to 6-4 overall, shot 50 percent from the floor and was just as impressive at the defensive end limiting SC State to just 27.3 percent. It was the third time the 'Cats have shot over 50 percent in a game this year.
Trailing 9-7 with 7:04 remaining in the opening quarter, Davidson closed the period on a 12-3 run to take the lead for good at 19-12. It canned 7-of-12 field goals in the quarter.
Early, who had 11 first-half points with nine of them from behind the arc, nailed a baseline jumper with 4:15 in the second quarter to push the lead to double digits at 27-16. SC State though closed the half on a 10-4 run to cut the Wildcats lead to four, 31-26, going into halftime.
After the Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 31-28 early in the third, the Wildcats responded with 10 unanswered to push the margin to double digits, where it would stay the rest of the way. Davidson pushed its lead to as many as 19 on separate occasions.
Davidson held a commanding 40-27 advantage on the glass, with 16 offensive rebounds. It also matched a team season high with 17 assists on its 24 field goals.
Bria Ratliff was the lone South Carolina State (3-5) player in double figures with 13 points.
Davidson will take some time off for exams before hosting East Tennessee State next Friday, Dec. 18, at 11:30 a.m. of Education Day.
GAME NOTES: This was the first meeting between both teams … today's game was the third of a season-long five-game homestand … Alexandra Long had five points, five rebounds and three assists off the bench … with her five triples on the day, Early has 186 for her career and needs three more to move into third all-time … Early, Latt and Dakota Dukes combined for half of the Wildcats' 40 rebounds.
