DAVIDSON, N.C.  — Senior forward Hannah Early tallied her eighth career double-double and Davidson rolled to a 64-51 win in its home opener Saturday afternoon against Western Carolina in John M. Belk Arena.
 
Early registered a season-high 20 points, canning a personal-best nine field goals, and pulled in a career-best 15 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. She also recorded three blocks and three steals, which were both season highs.
 
Davidson (5-3) won its ninth in a row in the all-time series vs. WCU and improved to 17-18 all-time in home openers, including 4-2 under head coach Michele Savage.
 
Assisting Early was sophomore Mackenzie Latt, who finished with 19 points on 9-of-13 shooting. The forward was coming off a career-best 23-point outing Tuesday at Radford.
 
The duo helped the Wildcats pull away early, combining to score 25 points in the first two quarters for a 34-26 lead at the break. They each had 15 of those points in the first quarter when Davidson held a 19-14 lead.
 
Justine Lyon reached double figures for the first time in her career, scoring 10 points and pulling in seven rebounds – a season-high four on offense. Davidson as a team had 46 rebounds to WCU's 40.
 
Up 36-30 in the third quarter, Davidson went on a quick 9-0 run to go up 45-30 with 5:53 left in the quarter. Western Carolina would cut the lead back down to single digits at 47-38 to end the quarter.
 
An 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter helped the 'Cats pull away for good to give them a commanding 56-38 edge.
 
Western Carolina (3-5) was paced by Sherae Bonner's 15 points, eight rebounds and five steals off the bench. The Catamounts' bench overall scored 31 points in the game.
 
Davidson swatted away a season-high tying nine shots and pocketed a season-high 10 steals, led by Alexandra Long's personal-best five.
 
Davidson remains at home to face No. 19/20 Michigan State for the first time next Wednesday at 6 p.m.
 
GAME NOTES: This was the 53rd meeting all-time between both teams … the 'Cats ran their record to 28-25 in the series, having won 12 of the last 14 overall … Davidson won its home opener for the first time since the 2012-13 season … Dakota Dukes was honored prior to the start of the game with her 1,000-point ball after becoming the 18th player in program history last weekend at the UNCW Thanksgiving Tournament to reach the mark in a career … Early tied her career-high with the three blocks … the Wildcats win snapped a 10-game losing streak at home that dated back to last season ... Davidson outrebounded its opponent for the sixth time this year, moving to 5-1 when doing so … the Wildcats are 4-1 when they score at least 60 points.
