WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — The Davidson men's tennis team capped off a busy Fall season by finishing out at the Wake Forest Invitational this weekend, Nov. 6-8, at the Wake Forest Tennis Complex.
Against a good mix of competition, the Wildcats sent eight players to the invite taking part in both singles and doubles.
Four Wildcats picked up two singles wins each over the weekend. Senior Evan Watkins reached the consolation final in the D2 Singles draw after he scored a 6-4, 6-1 win over his UNCG opponent and then won a super tie-breaker, 10-3, vs. Jason Burgess of Liberty after splitting the first two sets, 4-6 and 6-1. He fell in the final to Georgia State by the score of 6-2, 6-4.
Jack Riazzi earned a fifth place finish in the D1 Singles draw. He won his first match of the weekend with a 6-2, 6-1 triumph against Ryker Heller of Liberty. After falling in the second round, 6-3, 6-2, to Wofford, the sophomore came back for hard-fought 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 10-8 win against his GSU opponent. He sealed up the weekend with another strong win, this one by the score of 7-5(5), 4-6, 12-10 against his Tennessee Tech opponent.
Shamael Chaudhry and J.B. Gough each netted two wins in the B2 Singles and C1 Singles draws, respectively. Chaudhry earned a 6-3, 7-6(5) victory against Penn and then got a victory after his other Penn opponent withdrew.
Gough dropped his first two matches of the weekend, but regrouped to get past Andre Johnson of Georgia State, 6-1, 6-3, and then defeated Liberty's Alex Poynter with another solid straight-set match, 6-1, 6-2.
Artem Khrapko picked up a win in one of his consolation matches against a Radford opponent with a 6-3, 7-6(2) decision. Jordan Hart also earned a victory on the consolation side, taking down Penn's John Karlawish with a 7-6(8), 6-0 decision.
David Hager and Alex Howard rounded out the Wildcat singles players with a win each. Both ended their weekends in winning style over UNCG players, with Hager scoring a 6-4, 6-4 match over Logan Walker in the C2 Singles draw, while the senior Howard ran off a 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 win in the D2 Singles draw against Logan Blaser.
Davidson competed in four of the doubles draws. The pairs of Khrapko and Riazzi (B2 Doubles) and Gough and Hart (B3) each won on the consolation side of their respective draws after their final's opponent withdrew. Khrapko and Riazzi lost 8-5 in their first match, but came back for a nice 8-7 win over their Duke opponent.
Gough and Hart fell 8-7 in their first main draw first round match, but won 8-3 vs. UNCG.
Watkins and Howard won their first match in the C1 doubles, 8-6, against a pair from Virginia Tech, but lost to Wofford 8-6 before taking third place overall with an 8-7 victory against NSU.
Davidson will take some time off before starting up its Spring season in late January.
