WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — Wake Forest used a 15-4 run in the second quarter to pull away from Davidson in sending the Wildcats to their first defeat of the season by the score of 77-58 Tuesday evening in non-conference women's basketball at LJVM Coliseum.
The Demon Deacons (3-0) turned a 23-19 lead after the first quarter into a 38-23 advantage with the run and led by as many as 23 to win its third straight to start the year.
Amber Campbell had 20 points to pace Wake Forest, while Ariel Stephenson and Milan Quinn finished with 16 and 17 points, respectively. Campbell had 12 of her 20 in the third quarter, while Stephenson tallied 10 points in the second quarter, including seven during the game changing run.
Pacing Davidson (1-1) was Mackenzie Latt with 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting. She just missed a double-double, pulling in nine rebounds.
Dakota Dukes added eight points and freshman Justine Lyon filled the box score with seven points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals. Every Wildcat that played scored at least one point.
For the second game in a row, the Wildcats started fast as they opened up a 12-5 lead, capped off by a three-point play from Lyon. It was all Wake Forest after that, answering with its own run, rolling off a 10-0 spurt to take the lead for the rest of the game.
Latt's eight first-quarter points kept the Wildcats close as they were down four after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw the Wildcats go cold, allowing the Demon Deacons to push its lead out to as much as 15 points behind the 15-4 run. They held a 41-30 lead into the break.
Wake Forest's lead grew to 21 (58-37) in the third quarter and stretch to as high as 23 midway through the fourth quarter.
Davidson finished the game shooting 36.9 percent and were just 1-of-15 from behind the arc. Wake Forest hit 40.3 percent of its shots.
Davidson goes to the state capitol next when they play at North Carolina State this Sunday, Nov. 22, in Raleigh. Game time is at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the 11th meeting between the two schools, with Wake winning its sixth straight in the series … the last four meetings prior to tonight's game were decided by just a combined 11 points … the 'Cats' seven-game road swing to start the year is the longest since an eight-game trip at the beginning of the 2009-10 campaign … Davidson scored a season-high 40 points in the paint, but WFU countered with 46 of its own points.
