RALEIGH, N.C. — Playing its second straight ACC school, Davidson dropped a 58-42 decision to host N.C. State Sunday afternoon in Holliday Gym at Broughton High School.
Despite holding the Wolfpack to 31.7 percent shooting for the game, the Wildcats (1-2) were unable to find their own offensive stroke as they shoot just 30.6 percent for the game.
N.C. State hit eight of its 20 field goals from behind the arc and put three players in double figures to run its record to 5-0 to start the year, which is the second time in the past three years it has done so. Jennifer Mathurin led all scorers with 15 points followed by Dominique Wilson's 13 and Amber Richardson's 11 off the bench.
Returning to her hometown, senior Dakota Dukes recorded her first double-double of the season, and the 11th for her career, with 14 points and 10 rebounds in front of family and friends. The senior also added three assists and two blocks.
Diona Johnson came off the bench to net a season-high 10 points, one off her career high, hitting 4-of-7 shots, including two treys.
Davidson held the Wolfpack to 33.3 percent shooting in the first two quarters combined, including 5-of-16 from behind the arc, but Jennifer Mathurin's 13 first-half points pushed N.C. State to a 31-18 lead at the half. They led 19-8 after the first quarter.
Dakota Dukes did her best to keep the Wildcats' offense clicking, scoring 10 points and pulling in six boards combined in the quarters.
The Wolfpack led by as many as 26 points in the fourth quarter, but Davidson was able to find its offense late to close on a positive note with a 14-11 scoring advantage in the fourth quarter.
Behind Dukes' 10 rebounds, Davidson won the battle on the glass, 42-40, and got 18 points from its bench.
Davidson turns around and will play at High Point Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.
GAME NOTES: This was the seventh meeting overall between the two schools, with N.C. State winning its sixth straight in the series … both teams were playing each other for the third year in a row … the 'Cats' seven-game road swing to start the year is the longest since an eight-game trip at the beginning of the 2009-10 campaign … Kianna Speight had her second game in a row of six points … despite being held scoreless, Hannah Early pulled in seven rebounds … due to renovations to Reynolds Coliseum, N.C. State is playing its home games at Broughton HS, where Hall of Famer Pete Maravich played.
