DAVIDSON, N.C. – Henning Dirks' scored in the 109th minute to lift George Mason to a 1-0 (2OT) victory over Davidson in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Patriots improve to 6-7-3 overall and 2-2-3 in the league, while the 'Cats fall to 5-9-3 and 2-5-0.
Prior to kickoff, seniors Matt Pacifici, Shane Macnamara, Valeriy Sviderskiy, Alec Rotunda and George Kaloudis were recognized for their contributions on and off the field.
After being outshot 6-2 in the opening period, Davidson had a number of scoring chances early in the second half, but was unable to capitalize.
Davidson's best chance came from a Christian Fechter cross to Rotunda, who elevated for a header, which Mason's keeper turned away with a point-blank save. Sviderskiy and Maxi Pragnell also had second-half shots, but could not find the back of the net.
Dirks' sliding flick off a centering pass from Daniel Hoffman at the 108:31 mark, gave George Mason a 14-13 edge in shots for the contest.
Both keepers finished with four saves, while defender Nathan Marder, who went the distance for the Wildcats, recorded a crucial team save off the goal line.
Macnamara, Pacifici, Maxi Pragnell and Cort Coxhead also played the entire contest for Davidson.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its regular season with a 7 p.m. match in Pittsburgh against Duquesne next Saturday.
Spear's Postgame Comments
The loss was not for lack of effort or guts – the guys poured their heart and soul in to the match.
The game started out in a cagey manner with not a lot of chances in the first half. But we ignited in the second half and were all over them. It felt like just a matter of time when we would crack the seal, with Alec's impressive header as the potential tipping point.
The game opened up later on, because each team was desperate for the win and the three pivotal points in the Conference standings.
The emotional blow for the Seniors is impossible to define. All we can do is remind them about their amazing friendships and experiences as ultimately those are more lasting. And these Seniors have been exceptional examples of student-athletes and ambassadors for our program.
